Alexandra is 130 kilometres north-east of Melbourne; roughly 24 km west of Lake Eildon. The town's momentous historic building is the former Union Bank - currently the ANZ Bank building - situated at 93 Grant Street. It was designed by the architect G. Inskip, bragged of its striking stairway and mantelpieces, and has continuously been the central part of the town's streetscape. Other buildings around Alexandra of particular interest takes account of the Australian colonial post office, the court house and former shire hall and the English Victorian Free Library building all of which dates back from the gold rush days. When it comes to popular tourist attractions, The Alexandra Timber Tramway & Museum offers visitors a glimpse of Alexandra’s forest history and the beautiful surrounding of Rubicon Ranges. The Museum is set in Station Street, Alexandra and is open on the second Sunday of each month and runs steam, petrol and diesel locomotives on a 600 metre loop. McKenzie's Flora Reserve has fascinating displays of native Australian wildflowers and rare orchids. It is a very accessible nature walk as it is found at the southern end of town. You can find in the centre of town Alexandra’s Rotary Park with its swing bridge and barbecue facilities. It is a very ideal spot for a picnic. Cathedral Range State Park features a jagged, rocky ridge of sharply inverted sedimentary rocks about 7km long. The Park has clear mountain watercourses hemmed in by the splendor of the Cathedral Range and its outstanding peaks. The Upper Goulburn has a cool-climate that’s why it’s a wine grape growing area, manufacturing first-class award-winning wines. There are various wine labels in the region, manufacturing wine from grapes grown in over and above 30 vineyards. The Upper Goulburn spreads across from Tallarook to Mansfield, south to the Great Dividing Range and north to Lake Nillacootie. It comprises of regional centres such as Yea, Alexandra and Eildon.
